Iman Mahmoud: The human rights crisis in Egypt has continued to worsen from the coup until today

On International Human Rights Day, Egypt’s human rights crisis continues to deteriorate day after day, from the July 2013 coup until now. This reality has been confirmed by reports issued by several Egyptian human rights organizations, which indicate an escalation in systematic human rights violations, particularly over the past five years.

For years, the authorities in Egypt have deliberately continued to detain thousands of Egyptians without due cause or fair trials. They have subjected detainees to torture and enforced disappearance as tools of systematic repression—practices that have deepened the catastrophic impact of these violations, undermined social cohesion, and threatened the interests of the state.

We salute the steadfast and patient detainees enduring injustice in Egypt’s prisons—foremost among them the resilient women who remain strong and steadfast. We pray that God grants them freedom and delivers them safely from this ordeal, and that Egypt emerges from this dark period marked by oppression and tyranny.
