Muslim Brotherhood Stance on Syria Latest Developments

Dr Mohamed Hekmat Walid, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, said the group would not accept any settlement to be imposed on the Syrian people under duress, stressing that any 'forced' solution will compel the group to reconsider its position with regard to the entire political process.

In a press conference held by the groups' Media Office in Istanbul, Turkey, Wednesday, Walid, commenting on the latest developments in the Syrian crisis, added that the shelling of Syrian cities, schools and hospitals by the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian allies does not indicate seriousness of the Russian-American efforts supposedly looking for a peaceful solution to the Syrian issue.

Walid pointed that besieging cities and starving and displacing their people is a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2268, a crime against humanity, and the start of implementation of a scheme for demographic change before the eyes of the international community and under the auspices of the United Nations Organization.

With regard to the group's position on Turkish support for the rebels in the north of Aleppo, Walid said that the Muslim Brotherhood welcomes Turkey's support for rebel factions in the city of Jarablus, pointing out that Turkey protects its borders and national security, which helps indirectly in the maintenance and support of the Syrian revolution.

For his part, Hossam Ghadban, the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria's Deputy leader, said at the conference that the United Nations has failed for more than 5 years in stopping the Syrian bloodshed. He added that the UN has turned into a tool to support the Assad regime, providing millions of dollars to groups and parties that stand by Assad. Ghadban pointed that the group denounces UN supervision of agreements imposed by the Assad regime on the people to get them out of their homes, as happened in Zabadani earlier, and in Darya recently.

As for the group's stance on Assad staying on for a certain period during the proposed transition period, Omar Meshouh, Muslim Brotherhood media office director, affirmed that the group's position is clear and consistent – from the very beginning – and remains unchanged: neither Assad nor any officials with blood on their hands should stay on at any stage of the revolution, neither in the political solution, nor later. Meshouh pointed that those who want to talk about a political solution in Syria, must exclude Assad from the equation, and then talk could start with regard to a transitional period.
