African Commission on Human Rights Recommends Muslim Brotherhood Chairman Stay of Execution
The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights reminds ruling regime in Egypt of commitment to African Charter, urging government not to execute death sentence against Dr. Badie.
Friday, October 30,2015 00:20

The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) issued a recommendation to the Egyptian government to take all necessary measures to stop the implementation of any death sentences against Dr. Mohamed Badie (the Muslim Brotherhood's Chairman), pursuant to the provisions of Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 17 and 19 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, to which the Arab Republic of Egypt is committed since it is a signatory of ratification of the Charter.

ACHPR said Egypt must submit a report on measures taken in this regard, to stop the execution of any death sentence against Dr. Mohamed Badie, within 15 days. ACHPR added that if the Egyptian government failed to show commitment to ACHPR's recommendations, the issue will be included in its report to the African Union to be discussed in its next session, pursuant to Article 98 of the procedural rules of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

Earlier, the European Alliance for Human Rights submitted a request to ACHPR which stated that in Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Badie did not get any fair trial in which the minimum of international standards of criminal justice were upheld, which led to Badie being accused or convicted in 34 cases, although he is a university professor, recognized as one of the greatest hundred Arab scientists.

In the wake of protests in Egypt on August 16, 2013 government troops killed the Muslim Brotherhood Chairman's son (Ammar Mohamed Badie). Then, as he lodged a formal complaint against authorities, Dr Mohamed Badie himself was arrested, tortured and detained.

After investigating a complaint regarding this matter, ACHPR concluded that the above-mentioned recommendation is the most appropriate course of action.
