Ashri: We Did Not Propose Demonstration and Protest Law Amendment
Freedom and Justice Party leaders assure commitment to international standards in discussions of any law on citizens’ rights to demonstrate and protest.
Monday, December 31,2012 10:27

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Mukhtar Ashri, Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Legal Committee, confirmed that the party did not submit any laws regarding demonstration rights and will not accept any that restrict freedoms and rights guaranteed by the new Constitution.

Separately, Dr. Gamal Heshmat, Member of the Shura Council (upper house of Egyptian parliament), said that the Ministry of the Interior proposed a law to regulate demonstrations and protests, and that the Council postponed discussion of that law until a social dialogue is effected on the matter protected by the new constitution.

Dr. Heshmat assured that the law of demonstration and protest will commit to international standards and conventions, so it would improve the rights and freedoms of Egyptians and fully protect the homeland.

Some print and broadcast media reported the Shura Council Human Rights Committee will discuss, Thursday, a proposal for a draft law on peaceful demonstration, and will engage in a full community dialogue about the matter before finally passing the bill.
