In a statement Tuesday, Sobhi Saleh, member of the Constituent Assembly (CA) tasked with drawing up Egypt’s new Constitution, refused to comment on rejection by certain members of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) of their new status in the draft charter.

However, Saleh stressed that reports of the SCC's refusal of texts pertaining to its status in the new Constitution do not impact the Assembly, "The CA does not take suggestions of institutions and bodies from media reports and rumors.

"In any case, the SCC has no authority over the CA. It is the Constitution which establishes the authority of the SCC and not vice versa.

"Any party may have the right to make its suggestions in an appropriate way – not through the media, especially since the CA listens to all. Ultimately, it is up to the people to vote their approval or rejection of the new constitution."
