Ivory Coast, Algeria face off in CAN quarterfinals

Ivory Coast fears it may pay the price for a week without competitive football when it takes on fellow World Cup qualifier Algeria in the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations on Sunday.

The Ivorians, who will play shortly after host nation Angola faces Ghana, have not been in action since reaching the last eight with a convincing 3-1 win over Ghana more than a week ago. The gap follows Togo’s withdrawal from the competition, leaving three teams in Group B with just two matches to play.

Coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who tried in vain to organize a friendly with a local team to keep his players active, said: “So many days without playing a competitive match was not good, so I’ve adapted my training methods to this new situation. I put a lot of intensity in my training sessions and workload was heavy.”
