GAZA --  The ministry of prisoners’ affairs reported Sunday that the number of Palestinian prisoners suffering from diabetes in Israeli jails jumped to 88 patients at a rate of 10 percent compared to last year.

In a report issued on the world diabetes day on 14th November, the ministry said that those patients in Israeli jails suffer from diabetic comas and do not receive quick medical care.

It added that the hard psychological and physical conditions experienced by the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails provide a fertile ground for developing diabetes, noting that many prisoners became diabetic inside prisons.

The ministry affirmed the nurses in Israeli jails sometimes give diabetic prisoners the wrong medication for his condition as what has happened with prisoner Walid Akel who was given a medicine for the treatment of heart problems.

In a related context, the report underlined that there are more than 170 Palestinian prisoners out of 1, 600 patients suffering from other serious diseases such heart attacks, cancer, kidney failure and paralysis and most of them are medically neglected by prison administrations.

The ministry in its report appealed to international institutions concerned with the health field to send their representatives to visit Israeli jails and follow up the cases of Palestinian patients.
