M.J. Rosenberg alerts us to a proposed change in the language of the FY2009 spending law that would allow the continuation of U.S. aid to the Palestinians if Fatah and Hamas form a unity government. As the law currently stands, U.S. assistance would be terminated if the two factions establish a power-sharing agreement. Rosenberg argues that this would make it more likely for a power-sharing deal to be reached, which is “good news because the two-state solution requires that there be one Palestinian entity, not two. The two-state solution is tricky enough. Three states? Forget about it.”
