Tunisian authorities denied the right of Iman El-Tareeky, Member of the defense authority of Dr. Sadek El-Shuru, former head of the Tunisian MB, to visit her client yesterday, April 14. El-Tareeky had requested permission to visit El-Shuru in El-Nadhur prison but the appellate court refused which led her to protest to the court’s attorney general who finally granted her permission.
Again, she was denied contact with her client, this time by the prison’s administration on the pretext of the expiration of the follow-up period when in fact it was the last day.
This procedure was met with wide criticism by Tunisian human rights organizations as the Justice and Freedom Center denounced the stubborn denial of El-Tareeky’s right to visit her client and called on the cancellation of permits imposing restrictions on prisoners’ rights to contact their lawyers affirming that continuance in such procedures will not guarantee the conduction of just trials affirming that the case was altogether political anyway.
Tunisian rights organizations had sharply criticized El-Shuru’s trial especially following his press statements to El-Hiwar channel and Islamonline describing it as “an attempt to continue in the muzzling approach and involve judicature in political feuds.”
Worthy mentioning is El-Shuru’s serving around 18 years in prison during which the conditions of a just trial or respect for defense rights were absent in his trial that took place in an exceptional court under a fierce campaign against him. El-Shuru was released after 14 years of solitary confinement then detained again in this case previously mentioned.
